“Dodital & Darwa Pass: A Himalayan Journey”
Trekking in Uttarakhand
Known as the “Land of the Gods,” Uttarakhand is a treasure trove for nature lovers and trekkers. Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, this Northen state is home to trails that weave through dense forests, sparkling rivers, and high-altitude passes. From the spiritual aura of Kedarnath and Badrinath to the pristine beauty of hidden gems like Dodital and Darwa Pas Trek, every trek here is a blend of adventure and cultural immersion. From beginners seeking gentle and short trails to seasoned mountaineers chasing rugged summits, Uttarakhand has it all. What makes trekking in Uttarakhand truly special is the harmony between natural grandeur and human warmth; the welcoming villages, the folklore tied to every mountain, and the sense of timelessness that accompanies each step.
Recently, I had an opportunity to lead the Dodital and Darwa Pass Trek with Adventure Pulse. It was one of the most rewarding experiences to take the families with younger children on this scenic journey to Dodital Lake. From facing challenging weather conditions due to the western disturbance to trekking on an absolute clear sunny day, we got to experience different moods of nature throughout the journey. Although, the pictures don’t fully do the justice to the beauty we experienced on the trail, through this photoblog, I have tried to share my journey and a glimpse into this exciting adventure.
Before we dive into the visuals from the trek, here is a quick information about the trek.

Our group gathered in Dehradun and began a long but scenic drive to the Dodital Trek start point Agoda village. Our stay at Agoda was in a very cute homestay in the village with spectactular views of the vast valley right in front of it. The sunrise and sunset views from the Agoda village were absolutely stunning and with great weather in our favour, we set up a nice outdoor dining and enjoyed some delicious food prepared by the team at the homestay.

The Journey Begins

After a hearty breakfast in the compound area of our lovely homestay, our group got ready to begin the first day of our trek Manjhi campsite. It was a beautiful sunny day with very pleasant temperatures. The surrounding hills were covered in all shades of green and with the soft sunlight the snow clad mountains were simmering like gold in the early hours.
As we continued walking through a narrow trail leading upwards it took us traversing around a hill. On one side, we could see the vast valley surrounded by mountains. Due to the western disturbance, there was a good amount of snowfall on previous few days. We could see some fresh snow on top of these mountains. The combination of green and white mountains and a clear blue sky made for a picturesque views anywhere you look around.

“The trail opens with whispers of pine and oak, inviting us into the Himalayas’ embrace.”

“Every step forward feels like a step away from the ordinary world.”

With every step forward, it felt like the landscape was changing drastically. From Agoda we took a relatively steep trail leading towards a small village called Bhebra. The trail navigated through traditinal houses in the village and we could see teracced farms all around the vilaage. From a village trail in the initial part around Bhebra, now we were in complete wilderness. The trail entered into a dense forest of oaks and rhododendron trees. The trail was a combination of dirt trail and some sections with stone-paved pathways.

As we approached Manjhi campsite, the landscape quckly turned into a winter wonderland. The recent snowfall had covered the entire trail with fresh snow. The temperature started to feel cold as we navigated through snow covered trails surounded by tall trees.
Manjhi Campsite

After hours of walking through the forest sections, the trail opened up to meadows near Manjhi. We reached a beautiful campsite surrounded by a dense forest and snow clad mounatins at the distance. We spent rest of our day enjoying some delicious snacks and tea inside our cosy dining tent as the outside temperature dropped with setting sun. After a nice dinner, it was time to call it a day and rest to get recharged for the next day’s journey to the Dodital Lake.
Dodital Lake
The trek to Dodital Lake was an eventful day. We woke with some fresh snowfall overnight. Temeperatures were freezing as the sun hadn’t come out of the clouds. The entire campsite was covered in white. The orange color of our tents was popping out amindst the white blanket of snow all around. Considering the heavy snowfall in recent days and the fresh snowfall on the previous night, our team decided to a reccee of the route to check the trail conditions. As the conditions were not safe for mules to cross certain sections on the way to Dodital, we decided stay at the Manjhi campsite for the night and made a plan to do an excursion to Dodital Lake and return back. Due to very deep snow, there was not a possibility to attempt to climb towards the Darwa Pass or Darwa Top.

“Dodital’s still waters mirror the sky — a sacred silence wrapped in myth and beauty.”
After a sumptuous breakfast, we started our trek to Dodital. We carefully made our way through snow covered trail zig-zaging through a forest. Just above our campsite, we passed through some huts and temporary shelters made by locals and shepherds. We crossed a couple of small streams and continued traverssing around the mountains. We took a few breaks to rest and fuel for the challenging trek in snow and cold. Suddenly, the weather turned bad and with loud thunders and lightening it started pouring heavily. The temperature dropped very low and to our surprise hailstorms started falling. Our entire group showed great spirit and continued in this challenging conditions. Soon we could see some huts at the distance. Excitement was getting higher with every step bringing us closer to the stunning lake of Dodital.
And there it was, the majestic and holy lake of Dodital right in front of us! Surrounded by mountains and forest around, the crystal clear water of the lake with the reflections looked like a painting. As we went to see the temple of Lord Ganesha, the rain stopped and within a minute the sun was shining bright as if the nature god had finally heard our prayers. The sun light brought much needed warmth as we had been walking in non-stop rain, snow fall and hailstorm. Although the temple was closed, just standing there in front of this holy place which is believed to be the birthplace of Ganesha, and experiencing the spiritual energy was a moment I will cherish forever.

- “The trek is not just about the mountains, but the bonds forged along the way.”
Our team had prepared hot meal for us. After clicking some beautiful pictures and spending some time by the lake in the sun, we had our lunch sitting at one of the huts over there. As the weather was turning bad again, we decided to begin our journey back to our campsite at Manjhi with the aim to be there before it gets dark. The hot food and the sunlight that we got for a few minutes while we were at the lake did wonders and everyone was full of energy despite it being a long push in very challenging weather.

Descending down from Dodital to Manjhi felt easy and the eagerness to reach back to our cozy campsite where hot chai and delicious snacks were awaiting, made it a fun walk back. We kept admiring the snow clad mountains around and could see them completely chnage their colors as the fresh snow covered them in complete white. Our struggle with the weather did not end though. It kept raining every now and then and our group had to brave some very heavy rain showers during the last few kms back to the campsite. Our entire team safely made it back to campsite just before heavy hailstorm and rainfall started again. A long and tiring but a truly rewarding day ended with some great delicasies prepared by our lovely kitchen staff. We enjoyed our dinner and went to sleep early to get the much needed rest.

We woke up to a beautiful sunrise and a very pleasant weather the next day. Our team organised our dining setup ouside and we enjoyed our breakfast under the sun while admiring the stunning views in front us. We bid adieu to our camp at Manjhi and started retracing our way back to the village of Bhebra, our destination for the day.
It was a bright and sunny day. The sun rays passing thorugh high canopy of the tress were creating a very surreal atmosphere. The clear blue sky was adding the contrast to the snow covered mountains and landscape around. After gradual descent on a very gentle trail soon we found ourselves just above the Bhebra village. The last part to reach our campsite still felt too far and after a steep descent and trail passing by terraced farms, we made it to our campsite just in time for lunch. There was a beautiful stream flowing next to where we were staying. We spent rest of our evening sitting by the stream, enjoying cup of chai, some fun games and soaked in all the beauty the place had to offer as today was going to be the last night of our trek. Post dinner, it was time for stargazing as the night sky lit up with stars.
The Descent & Return
- “The trail back feels gentler, as if the mountains are bidding farewell.”
Next morning we headed back to Agoda which was just a short uphill trek. Upon reaching our guesthouse in Agoda, we treated ourselves with a yummy lunch and spent the afternoon just sitting outside admiring the vast valley views and hills in front of us. The sunset on that day was magical. Later in the evening, we got invited to a local’s house to attend a pooja ceremony. It was a lovely experience to see the local culture of Uttarkhand. We danced with locals and enjoyed every bit of our last day in this beautiful village of Agoda.
The Dodital and Darwa Pass trek is more than just a trail; it is a journey into the heart of the Himalayas and into oneself. The shimmering lake and the sweeping views from the pass remind us of nature’s vastness and our place within it. Trekking in Uttarakhand is not only about reaching destinations but about embracing the rhythm of the mountains; the silence, the stories, and the strength they inspire. As I look back at these photographs, I realize that each frame is a memory etched in time, a reminder that the Himalayas always have more to teach, if only we keep walking.
